Door Supervisors’ Course

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

1. Learners should, as a minimum, have English language skills in Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening to learn
   and pass the course.
2. Learners are to present the following documents:
   • First Aid or Emergency First Aid passed certificate. The certificate must be valid for at least 12 months from the course start date. Alternatively, learners may book themselves on one of the First Aid or Emergency First Aid courses with us.
   • To register for this qualification, learners must be aged 18 and over.
3. From October 2021, anyone wishing to renew their Door Supervisor license will be required to achieve the Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors in the PSI (Top Up) qualification before they can submit their license renewal application to the SIA.

ID REQUIREMENTS

1. Learners’ identification is checked at the start of the course and before they undertake the assessment. One of the following as proof of a learner’s identity is required:
   • a valid passport (any nationality)
   • a signed UK photocard driving license
   • a valid warrant card issued by HM forces or the police
   • another photographic ID card, e.g. employee ID card, student ID card, travel card etc.
2. Learners without proper identification will not be able to sit the exam hence it is important that they carry their ID with them on the first day of the course and on the examination day.

COURSE CONTENTS

Total classroom days: 6 Study hours: Total 52 hours (classroom: 44 and self-study: 8)

Module 1 – Principles of working in the private security industry (Study Hours: 17 including 8 for self-study)

• Chapter 1 – The main characteristics and purposes of the private security industry **
• Chapter 2 – Awareness of the law in the private security industry **
• Chapter 3 – Arrest procedures relevant to security operatives
• Chapter 4 – The importance of safe working practices **
• Chapter 5 – Fire procedures in the workplace **
• Chapter 6 – Emergencies and the importance of emergency procedures
• Chapter 7 – How to communicate effectively as a security operative
• Chapter 8 – Record-keeping relevant to the role of the security operative
• Chapter 9 – Terror threats and the role of the security operative in the event of a threat
• Chapter 10 – Keeping vulnerable people safe
• Chapter 11 – Good practice for post-incident management**

** Self-Study (8 hours). Learners will be provided with a textbook and a workbook to complete and return to the center prior to attending the course.

Module 2 – Principles of working as a door supervisor in the private security industry (Study Hours: 11)

• Chapter 1 – Crimes relevant to door supervision
• Chapter 2 – Conducting effective search procedures
• Chapter 3 – Drug misuse legislation, issues, and procedures relevant to the role of a door supervisor
• Chapter 4 – Preservation of evidence relevant to the role of a door supervisor
• Chapter 5 – Licensing laws relevant to the role of a door supervisor
• Chapter 6 – Queue management and venue capacity responsibilities relevant to a door supervisor
• Chapter 7 – Using equipment relevant to a door supervisor

Module 3 – Application of conflict management to the role (Study Hours: 11)

• Chapter 1 – The principles of conflict management to the role
• Chapter 2 – Recognizing, assessing, and reducing risk in conflict situations
• Chapter 3 – Problem-solving techniques
• Chapter 4 – Communication to de-escalate conflict

Module 4 – Application of physical intervention skills in the private security industry (Study Hours: 13)

• Chapter 1 – Physical interventions and implications of their use
• Chapter 2 – Risks associated with using physical intervention
• Chapter 3 – Reducing the risks associated with physical interventions
• Chapter 4 – Practical training in non-pain related physical skills to protect yourself and others from assault
• Chapter 5 – Practical training in non-pain related standing, holding, and escorting techniques

Module 5 – Action Counters Terrorism (ACT)

• Chapter 1 – On-line training with tutor’s guidance

Learners will need to complete ACT Awareness and ACT Security e-learning, download certificates, and hand a copy to the center before the course starts.

Assessment method

This qualification is assessed by practical assessments and multiple-choice questions. Learners are assessed individually when undertaking the practical demonstrations. Learners are required to undertake a practical assessment through a demonstration and participation in a scenario-based activity given by the tutor/assessor. Practical assessment evidence includes visual recordings.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Learners can transfer the achievement of The Principles of working in the private security industry unit if they hold and present one of the following qualifications certificate that contains the unit:

• Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors in the Private Security Industry
• Level 2 Award for CCTV Operators (Public Space Surveillance) in the Private Security Industry
• Level 2 Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry

Learners cannot transfer unit achievement from previous security qualifications (those available before April 2021) to this qualification.
